The best options, and what they cost (many are free).
From 6 April 2026, if your turnover (not profit) from self-employment and/or renting out property is more than Β£50,000, you have to use HMRC-approved software. And no more doing it all in January β you have to send an update 4 times a year instead.
The good news: it can be quick and many options are completely free. If you bank with NatWest, Starling, Monzo or Mettle, you may already qualify. Everyone else can use Sage or Clear Books at no cost.
Only 9% of people who need to sign up have done so. You are not late. But you need to sort it before 6 April.
Right now, you probably do your tax once a year β fill in a form and send it to HMRC every January. Job done.
MTD software is just an app on your phone or computer that replaces that form. Instead of one big form in January, you send HMRC a short summary of your income and spending 4 times a year. The app does the sending, you just keep your records in it.
You don't need to understand tax to use it.

This year (2026/27) there are no penalty points for late quarterly submissions. HMRC called it a soft landing. But miss your year-end submission and you can still get a Β£200 fine.
From 2027/28 it all counts. Miss a deadline = 1 point. Hit 4 points = Β£200 fine. Keep missing = Β£200 per extra point on top.
HMRC won't sign you up automatically. Even if you got a letter, you still need to register yourself through whatever software you pick.
